Contrast-Bath Therapy and Sensation Over the Anterior Talofibular Ligament
نویسندگان
چکیده
Context: It has been suggested that contrast-bath therapy alters sensation and enables patients to return to exercise more quickly. Objective: To determine whether contrast-bath therapy alters sensation of pressure in the ankle. Design: A 2 4 4 factorial design with repeated measures on 2 factors. Independent variables included gender, time (preapplication and 1, 6, and 11 min postapplication), and treatment (control, cold bath, hot bath, and contrast bath). Setting: Laboratory. Participants: 12 men and 12 women, college track athletes actively engaged in preseason workouts 5–6 days/wk. Interventions: Sensation of pressure was tested preapplication and 1, 6, and 11 min postapplication. Each treatment lasted 20 min. Main Outcome Measure: Sensation of pressure at baseline and 1, 6, and 11 min postapplication over the anterior talofibular ligament of the right ankle. Results: There was no difference between genders. Sensation of pressure was greater for the heat condition than the other 3 conditions at 1 and 6 min postapplication. During the heating condition, sensation of pressure was greater at 1 and 6 min postapplication than during preapplication. During the contrast condition, sensation of pressure was less at 6 min postapplication than during preapplication. Conclusion: Contrastand coldbath therapy (at 13 °C) do not affect numbness.

Healing of Complete Tear of the Anterior Talofibular Ligament and Early Ankle Stabilization after Autologous Platelet Rich Plasma: a Case Report and Literature Review
Lateral Ankle sprain (LAS) is a common sports injury associated with recurrent ankle sprain, chronic ankle instability(CAI) and post-traumatic ankle osteoarthritis (PTOA). Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) has been increasingly used forherapeutic applications in sports-related injuries, and is thought to stimulate tissue healing. We reported a case ofLAS with complete tear of anterior talofibular liga...
متن کاملAcute and chronic lateral ankle instability in the athlete.
Ankle sprain injuries are the most common injury sustained during sporting activities. Three-quarters of ankle injuries involve the lateral ligamentous complex, comprised of the anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL), the calcaneofibular ligament (CFL), and the posterior talofibular ligament (PTFL). The most common mechanism of injury in lateral ankle sprains occurs with forced plantar flexion an...

A rare case of talar body fracture combined with traumatic rupture of the anterior talofibular ligament and peroneal longus tendon is presented and reports in the literature are reviewed. We suggest that the mechanism of the injury was initial plantar flexion and inversion with rupture of anterior talofibular ligament and peroneal longus tendon, followed by forced dorsiflexion with talar body f...
متن کاملAnterior drawer test for acute anterior talofibular ligament injuries of the ankle. How much load should be applied during the test?
BACKGROUND There is a lack of consensus regarding the magnitude of load for performing the anterior drawer test in evaluating acute ankle injuries. PURPOSE To determine how much load should be applied during the anterior drawer test to detect the integrity of the anterior talofibular ligament. METHODS First, the anterior-posterior load-displacement response of nine cadaveric ankles was meas...
متن کاملMagnetic resonance imaging evaluation of lateral ankle ligaments and peroneal tendons in a group of asymptomatic patients
Background: The role of magnetic resonance (MR) imaging in patients with lateral ankle instability remains unclear. This study reports the MR findings in patients with asymptomatic ankles.Materials and Methods: A total of 14 ankles in 11 asymptomatic patients were evaluated using 3.0 Tesla MR scanners. Imaging planes included axial PD and T2 weighted sequences, coronal fatsaturated PD fast spin...
